illustrator pencil with a line through it.

help, i just downloaded a vector illustration and can't manipulate it in illustrator. i get an icon of a pencil with a line through it and i can't select any other tools. i can't even select the entire image. anyone have any ideas?

The layer is locked. Go to the layers palette and click on the padlock icon (right next to the eye icon). The padlock will disappear and you will be able to work with the file. If there is more than one layer, you will need to unlock each one.

...or (in case if this is not a layer what is locked) go on the menu bar and under Object choose unlock all ...

Also, there's a chance there's a clipping mask in the file... To remove it, select everything, right click and choose 'release clipping mask', that oughta do it. Hope one of these solutions work!
